“Very often we say, ‘What’s my purpose in life? What has God called me to do?’
“What we don’t recognize is that He made us in a special way, and in each season of life He gives us a different way to use our gifts.”
Alli Worthington, Executive Director of Propel Women, reminds us to continue to seek God for His purpose and plan for our lives, in any and every season. One of the primary hindrances to knowing the purpose God has for us is our overcrowded, busy schedules.
“We’re too busy and we’re focused on being all things to all people, trying to juggle all the balls; keep all of the balls in the air, and not really connecting with Him.”
God will reveal His purpose and plans to us directly, but we need to calm our hearts and ask Him for guidance in prayer. Alli shares an example,
“Saying, ‘Lord, show me how to connect these dots. Show me how to take the gifts that you’ve given me, in this season of life, and use them for Your glory.’”
When we are too busy, we are missing out on the life that God has for us.
Alli uses a personal example to demonstrate the importance of connecting with God to obtain His will.
“I spent years of my life missing what I was supposed to be doing. I was kind of functioning like a robot, serving needs, taking care of what I thought needed to be done, but not investing that time to seek His will and what His calling for me was.”
Investing time to seek His will is not a one time thing. Our lives are broken up into seasons with their own purpose and giftings; we need to seek God in each of these. Ecclesiastes 3 tells us that there is a time and a season for every purpose under heaven.
We also need to be understanding that the season we are in now is not our forever. Alli shares an example as she reflects back on different seasons in her life.
“If anyone told me 15 years ago that I would build my own business, would run an organization and write a book I would laugh at them; I didn’t even get good grades in school.
“I would say, ‘I’m a stay-at-home, homeschooling mom.’ All I wanted to do was to raise a family, be a good mom and support my husband. I still want those things, life just looks different now. I would have looked at my life right now and said, ‘That is crazy. There’s no way that’s happening.’”
The truth is that God has plans for us that we couldn’t even imagine.
Are you still trying to figure out what God’s purpose is for you in this season? Alli shares valuable tips on how to patiently wait on God.
“The key is always patiently waiting and serving, saying, ‘Ok, I’m here. Make me into who I’m supposed to be in the next season.’
“When we’re in that season, especially when we’re in the hard season as a little kids, we can’t even fathom what life will look like in 5 years, 10 or 15 years.
We are reminded to be open, patient and continue to trust in God, saying, ‘Lord, have your way in my life.’
