Then those who feared the Lord spoke with one another. The Lord paid attention and heard them. Malachi 3:16 (ESV)
There are five types of communication that make up the fabric of our relationships, according to a sermon by Robert J. Morgan, and they play a special role in keeping marriages from unraveling.
- Small Talk: Little conversations with one another that are pleasurable, builds rapport, and often lead to bigger things.
- Serious Talk: Where you broach difficult issues at a heart level.
- Self Talk: Conversing about personal problems, fears, hopes and ambitions.
- Soul Talk: Where spiritual matters are openly discussed such as those about your relationship with God and how you apply it to your everyday situations.
- Sweet Talk: Things such as, “I love you, Sugar Baby” – the language that can be best described as verbal snuggling.
Morgan says few marriages fail when these five kinds of communication are frequently practiced between a husband and wife. Keep talking with words and an attitude that honors God, and you’ll avoid needless misunderstanding and miscommunication in your home.
