God is in the details  – and He reminded me of that on what I thought was going to be a very ordinary day recently.  I woke up not feeling too great, and as I was getting ready to call into work, I received an incoming call from my landlady. She shared that an inspector would be by my house in an hour for a fire alarm inspection. She thought it would take half an hour.  With that news, I decided to push through and get dressed and go to work.

In my attempt to brighten my day, I decided to take a different route to work.  As I drove I prayed a very simple prayer that went something like this, “Lord, thank you for a new day. I am not feeling too hot today.  Would you just speak to my heart?  Help me Lord.  Amen.”  At that moment as I was driving on the freeway, a car zoomed past in the other lane, and written on the back windshield in shoe polish was (and I kid you not)  “I love you Kimberly.”  Coincidence?   I think not.  Fighting back tears, I managed to say, “Thank you Lord.”

As the day passed I thought more and more about my morning.  I thought about how I might have missed this most perfectly timed moment.  So many things had to come into place: deciding to go to work, taking a new route, praying and noticing the car.  What’s more is I would have been happy if the words on the windshield had just read, “I love you,” but for those words to be followed by my full first name was just remarkable.  Only God could pull that off.

This particular day’s event caused me to think about how God has ordered our days right down to the second.  Psalm 139:16 says, “You saw me before I was born. Every day of my life was recorded in your book. Every moment was laid out before a single day had passed.”  So many times we are tempted to worry over things that never happen and to control events we can not.  Daily we have to make the choice to hand over our worry and control and be on the look-out for unexpected surprises.
