The way you start your day often impacts the way you spend your day. While it’s tempting to start rushing the moment your feet hit the ground, there may be value it taking some time for a few key tasks that could ultimately make your day better.

1 – Take time to listen to God – If you haven’t done this yet, find a Bible reading plan you can follow. Here’s a good one to start. I found that I often began each day by reaching for my smart phone to check email or Facebook. I moved some of the icons around, and now try to open my Bible app before I do anything else. Starting the day reading the Bible is like checking my email from God, before I do anything else. Ask God to speak to you as you read. (And talk to Him as you read as well!)

Let the morning bring me word of your unfailing love, for I have put my trust in you.

Show me the way I should go, for to you I entrust my life.

2 – Exercise  – People who exercise in the morning are more likely to stick with a routine. 30-60 minutes of activity can take a big chunk of your day. If you tackle that right away, it’s less likely that you’ll get in the habit of ignoring it later. Additionally, studies have shown that exercising in the morning is much easier on your sleep than exercising before you go to bed.

3 – Plan your tasks – Take 5-10 minutes to write down your plan for the day. You can even take yesterday’s list, and recreate it. It’s a great time to look at the tasks you didn’t get done, and assess why they haven’t happened yet. Writing out what you need to accomplish can help you plan your attack, and lessens the likelihood that you will spend the day simply reacting to smaller “urgent” items that pop-up.

4 – Breakfast – If you’re going to skimp on a meal, don’t let it be this one. We’ve all heard the benefits of a good breakfast. From the mental benefits to the fitness benefits (breakfast eaters have an easier time shedding pounds!), start your day with good nutrition.
