Chances are you’ve heard the word metabolism used in the context of your health. However, do you really know what it means? Dr. Troy Spurrill explains what metabolism is and why it’s vital to maintain a healthy metabolism.
“Metabolism is the rate at which we burn calories. It’s basically how we take our food and use it for energy. We need several things to keep us going. First and foremost we need oxygen. We also need proper blood glucose levels to make energy. Then we need the calories to burn to create energy.”
Once we have all of those things in place, Dr. Troy says we need the key to make it all work.
“We need the key that turns on the engine. That’s where the thyroid comes in. It’s kind of like the ignition of a car. If you don’t have the thyroid, it’s kind of like having a full tank of gas in a Lamborghini and no key to start the car. We need all of those aspects going and then we need a driver.”
Our metabolism turns everything we eat and breathe into energy. The higher your metabolism is, the better your body is at turning the calories you eat into energy for your body. The lower your metabolism is, the more your body stores those calories as body fat.
If you do have a low metabolism, not only is your own health at stake, but the health of your children could be at stake as well. Dr. Troy says it is possible for parents to pass down to their children a genetic predisposition to a low metabolism.
“A lot of metabolism issues have to do with what your parents, grandparents, and great grandparents were doing. There is a genetic tendency, but a majority of these conditions get passed down through generations.”
Even if your metabolism has slowed down because you’ve gotten older, it doesn’t have to stay that way. He says it is possible to increase your metabolism even as you age by exercising regularly and eating healthy.
